 Check In and Recalibrate

In order to mitigate issues that may arise, and ensure all of the humans involved in the project have the support that they need, provide opportunities for participants (including mentors) to check in with the project leadership team regularly. This can include informal “drop-in hours,” listservs for participants to reach one another and/or the leadership team, and formal surveys provided at regular intervals throughout the project.

NOTES FROM THE PILOT: We had a weekly team meeting with the first 30 minutes reserved for drop-in visits from mentors. It was here that we learned a great deal of useful information such as our mentees’ difficulties finding the time for internships, or whether individual mentees were keeping up with communication with our mentors. Additionally, we sent formal surveys to both mentors and mentees at the midpoint and at the end of their work together.
