Ando by The Tadao touch: Ando's complete works to date. "In architecture, there is a part that is the result of logical reasoning and a part that is created through the senses. There is always a point where they clash. I don't think architecture can be created without that collision."" -Tadao Ando Philippe Starck describes him as a ""mystic in a country which is no longer mystic."" Philip Drew calls his buildings ""land art"" that ""struggle to emerge from the earth."" He is the only architect to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is the world's greatest living architect. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed in architecture. Ando has designed award-winning private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, as well as in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA. This book, created at the height of Ando's illustrious career, presents his complete works to date.

Architecture of Thailand by A detailed, profusely illustrated survey of Thai architecture with its many styles and forms. Thai architecture has evolved over the years to become a significant cultural art form. With a land area of about 514,000 square kilometers, Thailand is geographically and culturally divided into four regions: North, South, Central, and Northeast, each with its own identity due in part to borders shared with Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. This diversity is reflected in all aspects of Thai life, from its customs, language, and beliefs to art and architecture. Close contact with other Asian neighbors such as China, India, Japan, and Vietnam, and Western countries such as Britain, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands, has also had an impact on the development of Thai architecture, which forms an integral part of the cultural landscape. All types of structures are discussed here, from Thai houses to elaborate temples to crematoriums. The reader gets a close look at various sections within a building and its compound before exploring ornamentation in Thai architecture. Different materials used to achieve Thai style are also discussed. In addition to conventional architecture, the book discusses the hybrid forms that reflect the confluence of Thai and Western or other Asian styles. It ends with a look at contemporary Thai architecture and how traditional practices have been adapted to suit modern needs. 800 color illustrations.

Encounters and Positions: Architecture in Japan by Now as before, Japanese architecture is very popular in Europe and the western world. This publication provides an overview of its many design concepts and cross-references. Using design examples and interviews, the book presents thirteen current positions. The publication focuses on young architects who take up extremely independent positions within Japanese architecture, as well as on Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and Fumihiko Maki. Six essays by European specialists on Japan provide supplementary insights into the aesthetics and space concepts of Japanese architecture, making cross-references to Japan's architectural history, and explaining current lines of development. The book thus combines a self-reflective approach with an outsider's analytical view.

Contemporary Korean Architecture by A megacity is a metropolitan area with a population of 10 million or more people--some definitions also include density in the equation, requiring more than 2,000 people per square kilometer. Seoul, Korea, more than qualifies: with 10.3 million people living in an area smaller than New York City, it is one of the densest urban areas on the planet. This creates tremendous pressure on architects, who must figure out how to make the most of every square inch; often they build vertically, but is that the only answer? Contemporary Korean Architecture challenges architectural stereotypes and promotes innovation with 32 projects from the last 10 years by 16 representative Korean architects. By creating hybrids of conventional architectural typologies, these projects--which range from traditional timber-structure houses to corporate headquarters and sports arenas--meet the demands of Seoul's eclectic urban landscape in their own unique ways. Essays on Korea's urban and architectural histories complete the book, making it not only an important overview but the first to examine the means by which Korean architects are tackling one of the most difficult problems in the field.

House and Home in Modern Japan: architecture, domestic space, and bourgeois culture, 1880-1930 by A house is a site, the bounds and focus of a community. It is also an artifact, a material extension of its occupants' lives. This book takes the Japanese house in both senses, as site and as artifact, and explores the spaces, commodities, and conceptions of community associated with it in the modern era. As Japan modernized, the principles that had traditionally related house and family began to break down. Even where the traditional class markers surrounding the house persisted, they became vessels for new meanings, as housing was resituated in a new nexus of relations. The house as artifact and the artifacts it housed were affected in turn. The construction and ornament of houses ceased to be stable indications of their occupants' social status, the home became a means of personal expression, and the act of dwelling was reconceived in terms of consumption. Amid the breakdown of inherited meanings and the fluidity of modern society, not only did the increased diversity of commodities lead to material elaboration of dwellings, but home itself became an object of special attention, its importance emphasized in writing, invoked in politics, and articulated in architectural design. The aim of this book is to show the features of this culture of the home as it took shape in Japan.

The Metabolist Imagination: visions of the city in postwar Japanese architecture and science fiction by Japan's postwar urban imagination through the Metabolism architecture movement and visionary science fiction authors The devastation of the Second World War gave rise to imaginations both utopian and apocalyptic. In Japan, a fascinating confluence of architects and science fiction writers took advantage of this space to begin remaking urban design. In The Metabolist Imagination, William O. Gardner explores the unique Metabolism movement, which allied with science fiction authors to foresee the global cities that would emerge in the postwar era. This first comparative study of postwar Japanese architecture and science fiction builds on the resurgence of interest in Metabolist architecture while establishing new directions for exploration. Gardner focuses on how these innovators created unique versions of shared concepts--including futurity, megastructures, capsules, and cybercities--making lasting contributions that resonate with contemporary conversations around cyberpunk, climate change, anime, and more. The Metabolist Imagination features original documentation of collaborations between giants of postwar Japanese art and architecture, such as the landmark 1970 Osaka Expo. It also provides the most sustained English-language discussion to date of the work of Komatsu Sakyō, considered one of the "big three" authors of postwar Japanese science fiction. These studies are underscored by Gardner's insightful approach--treating architecture as a form of speculative fiction while positioning science fiction as an intervention into urban design--making it a necessary read for today's visionaries.

Learning from the Japanese City by Japanese cities are amongst the most intriguing and confounding anywhere. Their structures, patterns of building and broader visual characteristics defy conventional urban design theories, and the book explores why this is so. Like its cities, Japan's written language is recognized as one of the most complicated, and the book is unique in revealing how the two are closely related. Set perceptively against a sweep of ideas drawn from history, geography, science, cultural and design theory, Learning from the Japanese City is a highly original exploration of contemporary urbanism that crosses disciplines, scales, time and space. This is a thoroughly revised and much extended version of a book that drew extensive praise in its first edition. Most parts have stood the test of time and remain. A few are replaced or removed; about a hundred figures appear for the first time. Most important is an entirely new (sixth) section. This brings together many of the urban characteristics, otherwise encountered in fragments through the book, in one walkable district of what is arguably Japan's most convenient metropolis, Nagoya. The interplay between culture, built form and cities remains at the heart of this highly readable book, while a change in subtitle to Looking East in Urban Design reflects increased emphasis on real places and design implications.

Traditional Chinese Architecture by A groundbreaking book by one of the world's leading historians of Chinese architecture Translated by Alexandra Harrer. Fu Xinian is considered by many to be the world's leading historian of Chinese architecture. He is an expert on every type of Chinese architecture from every period through the nineteenth century, and his work is at the cutting edge of the field. Traditional Chinese Architecture gathers together, for the first time in English, twelve seminal essays by Fu Xinian. This wide-ranging book pays special attention to the technical aspects of the building tradition since the first millennium BC, and Fu Xinian's signature drawings abundantly illustrate its nuances. The essays delve into the modular basis for individual structures, complexes, and cities; lateral and longitudinal building frames; the unity of sculpture and building to create viewing angles; the influence of Chinese construction on Japanese architecture; and the reliability of images to inform us about architecture. Organized chronologically, the book also examines such topics as the representation of architecture on vessels in the Warring States period, early Buddhist architecture, and the evolution of imperial architecture from the Tang to Ming dynasty. A biography of Fu Xinian and a detailed Chinese-English glossary are included. Bringing together some of the most groundbreaking scholarship in Chinese architectural history, Traditional Chinese Architecture showcases an uncontested master of the discipline.
