Searching Databases to Locate Entrepreneurs

PrivCo - for private company information (requires a San Jose Public Library card to access)PrivCo is a database offered not by SJSU but by San Jose Public Library, which is open for all SJSU students. Apply for a card online, then access PrivCo to search private companies by location. Use the filter "Owner" to narrow down to entrepreneurs. PriviCo also has a filter for Ethnicity so you can locate entrepreneurs who have identified themselves as belonging to a particular community.

Reference Solutions Business Directory (formerly ReferenceUSA)Reference Solutions Business Directory is a database offered not by SJSU but by San Jose Public Library, which is open for all SJSU students. Business Market Research Collection This link opens in a new windowAlso known as Hoover's, you can use this database to locate company by location, size, industry, and other criteria to help you locate entrepreneurs.
Large, comprehensive business databases may take more time to search, but you may find local entrepreneurs by entering keywords such as entrepreneur and a particular city, market, or industry. Narrow to news articles for recent information and potential contacts.

The ABI/INFORM Collection includes three comprehensive databases: ABI/INFORM Global, ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry, and ABI/INFORM Dateline. Together, they provide access to thousands of full-text journals, dissertations, working papers, and key business and economics publications such as The Economist and MIT Sloan Management Review. The collection also features in-depth country and industry reports, as well as major news sources like The Wall Street Journal. With broad international coverage, the ABI/INFORM Collection offers researchers a global view of companies, industries, and business trends. It also delivers valuable historical context, with content that dates back to the early 1900s.

This database contains monographs, major reference works, book digests, conference proceedings, case studies, investment research reports, industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses, detailed author profiles and more. Indexing and abstracts for scholarly business journals back as far as 1886 are included.

Preparing to Interview Your Entrepreneur
Before you reach out to a entrepreneur, you will want to be prepared so that you can conduct an informed interview. Here are some resources to access:
Industry background. Be current on your entrepreneur's industry by reading an industry report. This will give you important background on an industry's fluctuations, major players, supply chain, and forecasts. Here are two databases that can help you with that. Search on the industry by name or by NAICS code.

IBISWorld provides in-depth reports on over 700 industries. Each report consists of 30 to 40 pages of key statistics and analysis on market characteristics, operating conditions, current and forecast performance, market size, market share of competitors, and industry growth rates. ReferenceUSAThis is a directory offered by San Jose Public Library. You can conduct an advanced search for owner/founders with many other filters, such as industry, zip code, size of company, etc.
Obtaining a card for the San Jose Public Library
All San Jose State community members are eligible to join the San Jose Public Library. After graduation, you can maintain your SJPL card as long as you have an address in the state of California.
To obtain an SJPL card, please refer to these steps and follow the instructions on the SJPL page, as their policies may change.
- Go to sjpl.org at www.sjpl.org
- Click on Get a Library Card.
- Complete the online application for a library card.
- At some point, you will need to show identification such as a passport or a driver's license at one of the SJPL locations. You can complete this at any SJPL branch or on the first floor of King Library.
- Once you have your card, you will create a PIN and then be able to access all of SJPL's online resources.
