Disabilities Services Policy


Statement of Policy & Text

To accommodate the needs of users with disabilities, the King Library will comply with all appropriate City and University policies, legislation, and regulations.

To ensure participation of users with disabilities in services, activities, or employment, the Library will provide reasonable accommodations.

Provision of some services may be on a case-by-case basis, depending on the individual’s specific needs.

Need for the Policy

This policy will help to:

  • Ensure accessibility of library resources to all library patrons.
  • Provide guidance for the staff who provide customer service to patrons with disabilities.

Requirements & Guidelines


  • The King Library was designed to be barrier-free for users with disabilities. Electronic doors, wide aisles, and Braille signs are a few of the physical features that contribute to building accessibility.
  • Staff assistance is available to overcome obstacles, such as the book stacks, which cannot be altered for accessibility.
  • The library’s website utilizes Disability Access Design Standards.

Individual Assistance

  • Staff members will read, write, or print a reasonable number of entries from the online catalog, periodical indexes (in print or electronic format), Web-based resources, or other information sources for persons unable to do so by themselves.
  • When extended individual attention is needed, the Library ADA Liaisons will be the primary contacts for assistance.

Telephone & Email Assistance

  • General questions about the library may be answered by calling the Call Center.
  • To receive answers to reference questions, users may:
    • Telephone the Reference Connection. When service desks are busy and extended individual attention is not possible, Library ADA Liaisons may be contacted for assistance.
    • Use email and/or a live chat session with a librarian. The Library’s Web page will link users to the reference email contact and Q&A Chat.
  • Upon request, library staff may also fax a reasonable number of pages of needed library items.
  • Users may also use the California Relay Service to call any library department.

Adaptive Equipment and Services

The Adaptive Technology Center (ATC), located on the 2nd floor in the King Library, is open to registered SJSU students, faculty, and staff during most Library hours or by appointment.

  • Students, faculty, and staff registered with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) have access to unique equipment in the ATC, such as an adaptive listening device, a Closed-Circuit TV, and PCs with adapted hardware and software.
    • An orientation to the equipment and individual training provided by the ATC are required before registered SJSU students, faculty and staff may use the equipment.
    • King Library staff are not available to provide assistance on adaptive workstations or other equipment in the Center.

Adapted workstations and equipment (in addition to the ATC) are located throughout the library and may be used by all Library customers/users.

  • ADA designated workstations permit text enlargement and/or audible screen reading when searching the online catalog, the Internet and databases.
  • Library staff will be available to assist users in the fundamental use of the adaptive software and equipment in these general library areas. Individual training will not be provided to users.
  • All training labs used for library instruction are equipped with adaptive software on selected machines.


Materials at the King Library will be paged upon request for users with disabilities.

  • Users may request paging at any service desk and the request will be routed to the proper paging service desk. Items will be paged as soon as possible.
  • The number of items that can be paged at any one time will be based on staff availability and workload.


Library materials can be renewed by phone or online at the library''s website.

  • Depending on demand for specific items, extension of the loan period may be granted under special circumstances.

Photocopying and Printing

All users must pay for photocopying and printing from computers. However, staff members will provide aid in copying or printing for users unable to do so by themselves.

  • When there is no time for extended individual attention, users with disabilities may be asked to leave the selections for later copying.
  • Services can be requested at any library service desk. The appropriate available staff person will be located to provide assistance.

Library Handouts and Brochures

Library publications, such as location guides, hours and services brochures, and guides to electronic resources, are available at service desks and via the library’s Web page. Library Liaisons can provide more details and answer specific requests if these materials must be converted to an alternative format.

For ADA brochures, etc:

This publication can be made available in alternate formats, such as Braille, large print, audio tape, or computer disk. Requests can be made by calling 1-408-808-2397 or the California Relay Service.

To participate in library programming under the Americans with Disabilities Act, library users can call the General Collections desk at 1-408-808-2397 to request accommodation or schedule an appointment with an ADA Liaison at least 3 business days in advance of the event.

Books Aloud, Inc.

Customers with visual, physical, or learning disabilities can obtain unabridged books on standard cassette tapes and other formats from Books Aloud, Inc., a private, nonprofit corporation, by calling 808-2613.

Feedback on Usability of Services

Users may offer suggestions or recommendations on disabilities equipment and services via email by writing to Libref@email.sjsu.edu or by the disabilities liaisons via telephone or the California Relay Service. Contact the SJSU disabilities liaison at 408-808-2096 and the SJPL liaison at 408-808-2397.
