Contact and group information

Procedures

  • When you plan to come in, enter your hours in the group's Google Calendar.
    • Note: there is only space at the repair table for two people at a time, so be sure to check this calendar to see when other volunteers are coming in.
    • I'll keep my hours listed at the top.
    • And you can see the hours of the department's student assistants (including Courtney) listed at the top.
  • When you arrive and leave the library be sure to move the red magnet on the sign-in/sign-out white board to the correct column.
    • This is important for the floor fire marshal to be able to know you're on site if there is an emergency alarm.
    • If there is an emergency alarm, the procedure is to exist through the stairwell that leads to the loading dock, then go around to the campus-side of the library and wait with all the other library employees and patrons until the 'all-clear' is given.
  • When you leave for the day, be sure that the repair table is straightened, all brushes and water jars cleaned.
    • Put all books you are working on or leaving to dry on your cart before you leave in order to keep the table clear for others

Other important information

I did not get the paperwork in place for you all to get credit for this work as an official practicum. I hope to institute that by next semester, or at least by next fall.

At present, you all are volunteering your time in exchange for hands-on practice, portfolio building and resume additions.

Because there is nothing official, or credit-based about this volunteer program, there is no requirement or expectation for hours.

If you find any credit, extra-credit, scholarship, or recommendation opportunities that this work can be put towards, please let me know and I am happy to help.

Building information

  • Work is located on the lower level (LL) in the room L-35 (aka Tech Services)
  • Until your Tower card is activated for keypad entry, please enter by the SJSU circulation desk and take the staff elevator down to LL
  • Once you have a working tower card, it will provide you access to the library through the doors in the loading dock.
    • Inside the loading dock, the door on the right (next to the rolling doors) will take you into the area behind the circulation desk and to the staff elevators that you can take down to LL. The door in the middle takes you into the stairwell, you can take the stairs down to LL. The door on the left is for the Public Library loading dock staff.
  • If there is an emergency alarm, the procedure is to exist through the stairwell that leads to the loading dock, then go around to the campus-side of the library and wait with all the other library employees and patrons until the 'all-clear' is given.
  • Across from the double doors into L-35 is a small kitchen with a communal refrigerator.
    • Feel free to bring food and store it there.
    • Feel free to use the microwave and sink.
    • The lockers in this area are for public library staff.
    • This refrigerator is also where we keep the jar of prepared wheat paste between uses. We keep it inside the refrigerator door, in the egg compartment.
  • There is a large first aid kit on the wall near the entry to the kitchen.
    • It contains band-aids and tweezers, but also basic pain killers if you need them.
  • There is a staff restroom at the other end of the hall from L-35 - look for the big blue wall
  • If you want to exit, or enter L-35 through the public area, the double doors next to the staff restroom lead out to the public elevators and stairwell.

Parking

  • The municipal parking structure across the street (San Fernando) from King Library allows you 90 minutes free, $1 per 15 minutes, $25 max. after that - ParkSJ: Fourth Street Garage
  • If you are staying for several hours, it is cheaper to park in one of the SJSU campus garages. I usually park in the West Garage, but it can be crowded during the week when school is in session so leave plenty of time - SJSU Parking Garages
