About The Study

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed higher education and workforce demands. As part of Governor Newsom's Executive Order N-12-23 to assess and advance the responsible use of AI in California, this study seeks to provide a comprehensive view of the current state of AI across California colleges and universities.

The study aims to identify gaps and opportunities in research, curriculum, and workforce development to inform future policies and funding priorities that will help assess and advance the responsible use of AI. This study will analyze AI initiatives across California’s universities and community colleges, assessing research, curriculum, workforce preparedness, policy influence, and community engagement. By identifying gaps and opportunities, the study will help inform future policies and AI frameworks that align with responsible AI adoption, workforce readiness, and ethical considerations.

Research Focus Areas

  • Ethical & Responsible AI Policies - Evaluation of AI policies and responsible AI use.
  • AI Equity & Access - Emphasis on AI literacy, equity, and access.
  • AI-Integrated Curriculum - Emphasis on AI and Responsible AI focused curriculum.
  • AI Research & Funding - Analysis of research initiatives focused on AI development.
  • AI Workforce Development & Career Preparedness - Employer engagement and industry-aligned AI programs.
  • Community Engagement - AI-related local partnerships and education efforts.

Methodology & Data Collection

The study will collect the following for its data colletion:

  • Web Content Analysis - Web crawling tools will analyze institutional websites and AI initiatives.
  • Qualitative Survey - Surveys will be distributed to key stakeholders at various institutions.

Institutions Invited To Participate:

This study aims to assess AI integration efforts across the following institutions, which have been invited to participate in the survey:

  • All 23 CSU campuses
  • All 10 UC campuses
  • All 116 California Community Colleges
  • Select private universities such as Stanford, USC, and Loyola Marymount

  • Gap Analysis Summary - Identifying key challenges in AI adoption.
  • Best Practice Models - Showcasing successful AI policies and programs.
  • Opportunity Analysis - Recommending scalable AI education and workforce solutions.
