NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) policy, effective January 25, 2023. This new policy requires Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) for all NIH-funded research that results in the generation of scientific data.
- NIH requires that researchers discuss 6 elements around how they will manage and share their data
- Submit a DMS plan for review when applying for funding
- Comply with the approved DMS plan
- NIH Program Staff will assess DMS plans, but not part of overall impact score
Elements of an NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan (2023):
- Data type
- Related tools, software, and/or code
- Data standards
- Data preservation, access, and associated timelines
- Access, distribution, or reuse considerations
- Oversight of data management and sharing
You can find the entire policy, along with resources, on the NIH website:

Example DMS PlansThe example DMP directory was compiled from researchers, institutions, libraries and workgroups who shared their data management plans online from 2012-2022.
This directory is intended to help researchers comply with the new NIH policy and will not be updated after publishing. These plans cover NIH grants and those from other funding bodies. -
