Collection Development Policy - Global Innovation & Leadership

Programs Supported

Selection for the School of Global Innovation and Leadership supports a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Areas of concentration include Entrepreneurship, Global Operations Management, and International Business.

Concentration in Entrepreneurship
Prepares students with a drive for innovation and the passion to create new businesses, to be entrepreneurs, or corporate innovators. 

Concentration in Global Operations Management
Prepares students for careers in global manufacturing, service, and consulting organizations by offering a variety of courses in management of materials, quality, supply chains, services, global projects, and operations strategy.

Concentration in International Business
Designed to prepare its graduates for careers in handling all aspects surrounding global businesses. In addition students may select an area of specialization, either a business functional area, an industry area, a geographic area of study, or language studies.

Existing Resources

The University Library serves as the University's main resource for this subject. The collection is enhanced by access to materials at other libraries through Interlibrary Loan and the CSU+ programs.

Coordination

Some collection areas may overlap with the Economics Department (managerial economics), the Political Science Department (public administration), the History Department (labor and business history) and the Urban and Regional Planning Department (urban policy and management). Responsibility for acquisition, cancelation and other collection decisions in these areas of overlap is decided in consultation with faculty and librarians responsible for collection development in these fields.

This area includes materials that give broad overviews on the topic of business. General topics in business are also included in the public library collection.

SJSU will coordinate collection development with the SJPL especially in the following categories:

  • Business Planning

  • Business Biographies

  • Business Directories

  • Business Communication

  • California Business Information

  • Cultural Diversity and Business

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Human Resource Management

The library's print and digital collections are both strong in the area of global innovation and leadership. The library provides access to significant journals in this field through its databases, which include Business Source Complete, CountryWatch, IBISWorld, and more. Additionally, with a San Jose Public Library card, the campus community can access the databases PrivCo and Reference USA. See the Business research guides for annotated lists of the databases available.

The print collection is also robust. In addition, CSU+ provides quick access to print books from the collections of the 22 other California State University campuses. Faculty and students can also use Interlibrary Loan to borrow books outside of the CSU system.

Deselection

As King Library provides resources at the level of Advanced Study for Instructional Support, the collection is systematically reviewed for currency of information and for assurance that essential and important information is retained, including significant numbers of retrospective materials.

Deselection for Global Innovation and Leadership

The Lucas College of Business's School of Global Innovation and Leadership plays a critical role in advancing research, instruction, and entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley and worldwide. To support these efforts, our collection development policy is designed to align with the evolving needs of faculty and students, ensuring access to the most relevant and up-to-date resources. 

In addition to developing the collection, we periodically conduct deselection to remove materials that are outdated or no longer actively used. This process ensures that our collection remains both current and useful, with a focus on providing resources that directly support faculty research and the academic success of students. Faculty feedback is an integral part of this process, ensuring that the library’s collection continues to reflect the dynamic nature of the business world.

Current deselection activity

Fall, 2024

Dear GIL faculty,

If you would like to review the list of print books your librarian is considering for deselection, please click on the link to the spreadsheet below. Please comment on what items, if any, you'd like the library to retain and why it's important to do so.  

Please complete by December 2nd, 2024. Email Jane at jane.dodge@sjsu.edu if you need an extension. 

Criteria for Fall, 2024 deselection:

  • Small, targeted deselection focusing on rarely- or never-circulated print items. The proposed books have not circulated since at least 2003, which is when we started collecting uniform circulation data. 

Each print book being considered is:

  • Available at at least five other CSU campuses, available within 1-2 days via our CSU+ system;
  • Available via Inter-Library Loan from at least 50 libraries in the U.S.;
  • Readily available and not considered rare according to Worldcat, the Library of Congress catalog;
  • Not an SJSU faculty or staff publication. Please note, faculty/staff pub status relies on hand-entering and we have missed some over the years. If you spot an item written by an SJSU colleague, please let the librarian know so the record can be corrected and the item can be kept in the library in perpetuity.
